Tips to get the best rental home experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- The earlier your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home six to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
- Summertime is high season in Charleston. To book the largest rental home within budget, we suggest booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies usually offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for specifics.
- Often, management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guide magazines which include special offers, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Select your vacation week and maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Harleston House
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking pages. If not, reach out to the host before you reserve your home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to work out what configuration is optimal for your group.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a rental that allows animals. Request details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a particular Charleston area destination you crave, keep an eye out for homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
More considerations:
- Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, stereo or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few problems.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Note any damages to the property during check in, and immediately send them to the host. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if there is a dispute.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peaceful home. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Just prior to departing, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a terrific stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
