Charleston vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Sticking to a spending plan:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. To get the best value, change your family's Charleston area trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
- Property managers sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Select your vacation week and budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration you need. Downtown Duplex - Coming St - Sleeps 20 has 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, email the property manager before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish which bed configuration is right for your family.
- If your family is bringing pets, search for a property that allows animals. Request details on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, hosts charge additional pet fees.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
Advice for your stay:
- Add the owner's contact info to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental home while you are out. Protect your property!
- Upon check-in, document any issues with the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all of your things. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
