Charleston rental home tips and tricks:
Finding the best rental value:
- In the Charleston area area, The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Reserve your rental property in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your family qualifies for a special rate.
- Property managers often offer renters an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides have money saving offers on local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to select the perfect rental home in the Charleston area area:
- Select a group leader, select your vacation dates, and choose a spending budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Charming Lowcountry Bungalow has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the host before you book the rental. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to determine which bed configuration is optimal for your group.
- If your group is vacationing with pets, you will need a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
- Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental home.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
During your stay:
- Take a copy of the host's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Put the manager's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, elevator or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many concerns.
- Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home while you are away, just like you would back home.
- At Check-in, record any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, remember to take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on good feedback to stimulate more reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best vacation home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
