Tips and Tricks for getting the best vacation rental experience:
How to get the best rental home value:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, try changing your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer excellent temperatures, , and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
- Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, travel guides contain deals for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.
Narrow your Search:
- First and foremost, have your family choose vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Downtown Historic Home Steps to King St has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally accessible online. Otherwise, call the host before you reserve the home. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
- Some rentals allow pets, but others don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the property management company about allowable breeds and types before booking.
- If there's a specific Charleston area attraction you are crazy about, look for homes that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
More tips for your visit:
- Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are out, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute is filed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to reconfirm you've collected all of your things. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
