Tips and Tricks for getting the best Charleston vacation home experience:
When to reserve a Charleston area rental home & When to go:
- Summer is the most expensive season in coastal SC. To find the best rental home within your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at Charleston area restaurants, tours, and activities.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some owners offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your family.
- Property management companies usually offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides have deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Choosing the perfect vacation home in the Charleston area area:
- Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. The Bogard Only 4 Blocks to King! Unit A has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property owner before you book the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your group.
- If there's an individual Charleston area attraction you long to visit, keep an eye out for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs may be applied to your agreement.
More considerations:
- Get the host's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Put the host's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Make a record of any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are valuable if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many problems.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers disrupting your home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected everything. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a terrific stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
