Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect Charleston vacation property experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- In the Charleston area area, The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked very early. Booking your rental home 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. Booking your vacation rental in Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guides contain money saving offers on nearby accommodations and attractions.
Finding the best rental:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation week, and select a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your group requires. Walk Everywhere - Newly Renovated - 5BR\/5BA! has 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If not, contact the property manager before booking your home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is right for your family.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Request details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some hosts charge additional pet fees.
- If there's an individual Charleston area beach you love, browse homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Tips for a smooth stay:
- Add the owner's contact info to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent lots of issues.
- Keep the property locked while you are out! Don't let crooks ruin your family vacation.
- To ensure that damages are not attributed to your visit, record any problem areas during check in. Speak to the property manager immediately to record any issues. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Re-check every room of the vacation property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a wonderful time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
