Charleston area rental home tips and tricks:
Get the best rental home value:
- Summer months are high season in the Charleston area area. To get the best value, try changing your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
- Property managers frequently offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, travel guides contain deals for local tours and attractions.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Choose vacation dates and spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Thomas Waring House Suite D
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking websites. Otherwise, reach out to the host before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
- Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
Know before you go:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home. Store the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
- To make sure damages aren't attributed to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas during check in. Get in touch with the host right away to record any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent many issues.
- Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your belongings at departure. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the property a final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a great time? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
