Strategies to get the perfect Charleston area vacation rental experience:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To find the largest rental home within your budget, we suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Charleston area attractions. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines have coupons for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Narrow your Search:
- Choose dates and max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Ocean Views, Screened-In Porch, Steps Away From Beach And Pool has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property manager before you reserve the rental. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
- Some rental properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of family pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
- If there's an individual Charleston area destination you crave, search for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
Tips for your stay:
- Store the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few concerns.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
- During check-in, make note of any issues with the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all personal items at check-out. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a fantastic stay? Many rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
