Description and History:

174 Saint Philip Street, Unit D– The Alexander Wilson

The land (lot 33) on which this remarkable building was constructed was acquired by Dr. Samuel Wilson in 1819. The property was part of the Rowland Rugely (1734-1776) estate. One month after purchasing the property he deeded it to his son Alexander B Wilson. Wilson, listed as a planter, constructed this home in 1820 and occupied the property until his death on November 20, 1840.

Designed in the distinctive “Charleston Single House” style, this home features a variety of unique and striking architectural characteristics that have contributed to its widespread popularity. The structure is one room wide and extends numerous rooms deep, with the narrow side facing the street. Full length piazzas provide ample outdoor living space and shade to keep the home cool. In addition to the piazza, this home has an additional porch with a raised bar table, suitable for outdoor dining. This second-floor apartment is characterized by tall ceilings and huge, symmetrically arranged windows on the facades, steep gabled standing seam roofs.

This is not a typical short-term rental; it is not a freshly constructed unit in an old neighborhood, nor is it located on a tiny lot in a questionable or remote area. The old wood floors, tall ceilings, standing seam copper roof, copper guttering, original moldings, plasterwork, old glass windows, and solid panel doors exude a special warmth, character, and charm that that is very difficult to achieve in new construction. It's the real deal!

Strategies to get the very best vacation property experience:

Sticking to your spending budget:

  • In the Charleston area area, The sooner your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The best rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal SC. To book the most suitable rental within your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular Charleston area attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property management companies often offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have deals for local accommodations and attractions.

Planning, picking, and booking a perfect Charleston area vacation home:

  • Start by choosing your a vacation week and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. 178 D St Philip Square has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is normally available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before booking your rental. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what bed configuration is best for your vacation.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you will need a pet-friendly rental. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property managers charge additional pet fees.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to find nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Tips for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your .
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents quite a few concerns.
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're away! Don't let thieves ruin your vacation.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if there is a dispute.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors bothering your peaceful home life. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would have never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just prior to departing, complete a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property a final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, take photographs of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a fantastic vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
