Booking the best vacation property experience:
Money saving strategies:
- Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in Charleston. Booking your Charleston area vacation home in Fall or Spring months is a great way to save money on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Hosts sometimes offer promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your family.
- Property management companies often offer guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides have money saving offers on local tours, shops, and attractions.
How to pick the best vacation home:
- First, have your group agree to vacation dates and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group needs. The Trifecta at 493 - 3 Suites - On King! has 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available online. Otherwise, reach out to the property manager before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or costs applied to your contract.
- Are you visiting for a single event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Additional considerations:
- Get the host's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of difficulties.
- Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would at home.
- To make sure no damages are attributed to your family's visit, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon check in. Call the property manager right away to document any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be an excellent source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property one final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take video of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Hosts rely on excellent reviews to inspire more reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to solve it.
