Strategies to get the best vacation property experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Reserve your Charleston area rental home in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked early. Booking your rental home six - twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Booking websites often offer their guests an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain offers and deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Planning and choosing yourvacation home:
- Begin by choosing your vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. Historic Downtown Family Friendly Spacious Home has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you book your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish which bed configuration is right for your family.
- Does your family require particular amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or could be applied to your contract.
Tips to have a terrific stay:
- Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- To make sure that damages aren't attributed to your family's stay, make a record of any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the property manager right away to report any issues. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would've not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to confirm you haven't leave anything behind. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a great time? Many rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
