Tips to get the perfect Charleston vacation property experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- Summertime is high season in Charleston. To find the best value, try shifting your group's trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain coupons for local tours, shops, and attractions.
Selecting the perfect rental:
- Select a group lead, select your trip dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. Folly Beach GEM! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before booking the home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You'll need to work out what configuration is suitable for your family.
- If there's a specific Charleston area beach you love, browse homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your needs.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
Advice for your stay:
- Add the host's contact information to your smartphone. Understand and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- During arrival, make note of any damages to the property and immediately alert the host. Keep records of all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of concerns.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable visitors disrupting your life at home. Use the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are away, just like you would at home.
- Re-check the property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a wonderful stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your property and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
