Strategies to get the optimal Charleston area rental home experience:

Getting the best value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. To get the best value, consider shifting your family's Charleston area vacation to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Book your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if rate reductions are available for your family before you book.
  • Property management companies usually offer guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Often, property management companies supply Charleston area area visitor guide magazines that include special offers, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Choose a group leader, choose your dates, and choose a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. The Lodge Alley Inn in the heart of Charleston! has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually accessible online. If they are not listed, reach out to the host before you book the home. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property managers charge additional pet fees.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the host's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of concerns.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an excellent resource to find the best local beaches.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • At departure, complete a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave feedback! Property managers rely on great ratings to propel future reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
