Tricks and tips to get the best Charleston area rental home experience:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Booking your vacation rental in the Spring or Fall is a great way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your family qualifies for a discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guides contain offers and deals for local tours, shops, and attractions.
How to select the best rental:
- Begin by choosing your a vacation week and a budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your group needs. The Gardenia House
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly available on booking websites. Otherwise, reach out to the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or costs could be applied to your contract.
- If there's an individual Charleston area destination you crave, browse properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking
Additional considerations:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental. Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of concerns.
- Lock your rental while you're away. Keep your property safe!
- Note any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that are useful if a dispute is filed.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peace. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would've never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
