Getting the best Charleston vacation rental experience:
When to reserve a Charleston area rental home & When to go:
- Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To find the largest rental home for your budget, we suggest booking in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Some hosts offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Many management companies supply Charleston area area visitor guides which often include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Start by selecting your trip dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Stylish Bohemian Downtown Charm has 7 bedrooms and 8 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before reserving the vacation home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out what is suitable for your vacation group.
- If your family is bringing pets, you must book a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a specific Charleston area beach you long to visit, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
- Suitable accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking
More considerations:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before traveling. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would back home.
- Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if there is a dispute.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peace and quiet. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would've never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to confirm you have not forget any personal items. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the host is not available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a fantastic time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
