Tricks and tips to get the best Charleston vacation property experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Booking in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
- The earlier you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation property 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
- Some property managers offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for nearby shops and restaurants.
Narrow your Search:
- Select a group lead, select your vacation week, and choose a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Historic Duplex 6 Blocks To King - Lots of Parking has 7 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
- If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Make sure to ask for information on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property managers charge additional pet fees.
Considerations for your stay:
- Add the owner's information to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Make a record of any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions during your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors bothering your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Lock your rental while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a fantastic stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
