Tips and Tricks for getting the perfect Charleston vacation home experience:
Sticking to a rental home budget:
- Summer is high season in the Charleston area area. Reserve your Charleston area rental home in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for details.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides contain offers and deals for local shops and restaurants.
Use filters to search efficiently:
- Begin by choosing your the best vacation week and a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Serene Escape Over Heated Pool, 1 Block to King St has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before you book the home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine which bed configuration is best for your vacation.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
- If your group is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
More considerations for your visit:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
- Make a record of any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent quite a few difficulties.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often, nearby homes are filled by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Keep the property locked while you are gone! Don't let burglars spoil your family vacation.
- Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did you have a great time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
