Tricks and tips to get the very best rental home experience:
Sticking to a rental home budget:
- The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Booking your rental up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and book your vacation home.
- To get the best value, try shifting your trip dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer warm weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your group qualifies for a special rate.
- Property management companies often offer customers an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for more information.
- Many management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Choosing and booking your prefectvacation home:
- Select your vacation dates and max budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Renovated Classic Beach Cottage near the Beach! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking pages. If not, call the property owner before you reserve the rental. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is suitable for your vacation.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to search for a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
- Is your group looking for specific amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
Additional considerations:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many concerns.
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Upon check-in, make note of any damages to the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a terrific resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Just prior to departing, take a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever you can. If the property manager is not available, remember to take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on good ratings to propel new reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
