Strategies to get the perfect Charleston area rental experience:
Get the most from your rental home budget:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Charleston. To get the best value, shift your family's Charleston area vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
- In the Charleston area area, The earlier your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked early. Reserving your rental property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental home.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines have money saving offers on local restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Filter your rental search:
- Select your vacation week and budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration you need. ?Modern Downtown Home w\/Balcony, Yard + Free Parking? has 3 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. Otherwise, call the property owner before you book the property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Does your group require special amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters for amenities. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- Some properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.
More tips for your visit:
- Add the host's information to your phone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Note any issues with the property during check in, and immediately send them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute arises.
- Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers disrupting your peace and quiet. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental one final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a fantastic time? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
