Tricks and tips to get the best Charleston area vacation rental experience:
Money saving strategies:
- Summer time is high season in the Charleston area area. Reserve your rental home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Owners sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitors guide magazines have offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Make a plan and choose a perfectvacation home:
- Start by having your group select vacation dates and a spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Perfectly Positioned Place for all of Charleston! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is often available on booking websites. Otherwise, email or call the property management company before you reserve the property. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
- Visiting for a single attraction or event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before booking
- If your family is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, property owners charge additional pet fees.
Additional considerations:
- We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
- Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be valuable if a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Apply the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would've not otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything at departure. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a fantastic vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
