Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
When to visit & When to reserve a Charleston rental home:
- Summer time is high season in Charleston. Book your Charleston area vacation in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- The earlier your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your vacation rental.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property management companies often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain discounts for local accommodations, tours and attractions.
Make a plan and pick the best Charleston area vacation home:
- To start, have your group commit to trip dates and a spending budget.
- Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family requires. Luxurious Penthouse - Steps from King Street has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available online. Otherwise, call the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks.
- Is your group looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some do not. Allowable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about your furry family members before booking.
More considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed backup.
- Note any issues with the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of problems.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for any damage. We suggest inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on great reviews to stimulate future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your feedback find their best vacation home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
