Strategies for getting the perfect vacation home experience:

When to book a Charleston area rental & When to go:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To find the most suitable vacation home within your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at local restaurants, tours, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guide magazines contain coupons for nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Make a plan and pick the right Charleston area rental:

  • First, have your group agree to vacation dates and a budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Central & Cozy Downtown Apartment has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is usually available online. If not, email the property manager before booking the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or could be applied to your contract.
  • Visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Tips to have a great stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents many difficulties.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • To make sure that damages are not attributed to your stay, inspect for any problem areas during check in. E-mail the property manager right away to relay your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can frequently help. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Upon check-out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a terrific vacation? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
