How to get the best Charleston vacation property experience:
Finding the best value:
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Charleston. Reserve your Charleston area rental in the Spring or Fall to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- The sooner your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Booking your rental six to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
- Some property managers offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property managers often offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have deals for local accommodations and attractions.
Planning and picking your Charleston area rental:
- First and foremost, have your group select trip dates and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. The Lodge Alley Inn, Charleston, 2 Bedroom Flat has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is usually available online. Otherwise, email or call the host before you book your rental. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to determine what configuration is right for your group.
- Visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Pet fees or charges may be applied to your invoice.
More tips for your visit:
- Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. Store the manager's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if a dispute arises.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
- Be respectful. Often, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental home while you're out and about. Keep your property safe!
- Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal items. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave feedback! Property managers rely on excellent feedback to propel more bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
