Tricks and tips to get the optimal Charleston area rental home experience:

Getting the best rental home value:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Charleston. Book your Charleston area rental home in the Fall or Spring to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your vacation home 6-12 months before your travel dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental property.
  • Some owners offer rate reductions for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Choosing the perfect rental home in the Charleston area area:

  • Start by choosing vacation dates and a maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group needs. The Bay Stay
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available online. If not, email the property owner before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is optimal for your vacation.
  • Is your group looking for particular amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental
  • If your group is traveling with pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Request details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your .
  • Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if there is a dispute.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud vacationers bothering your peaceful home life. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are away! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the property to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the property to record its condition.
  • Did you have a wonderful vacation? Many rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
