Strategies to get the best rental experience:
Find your perfect vacation home:
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To find the best value, try shifting your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
- Some hosts and property managers offer promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Many rental management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guide magazines which include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Planning, selecting, and booking the rightrental:
- First, have your group decide on date ranges and a max budget.
- Determine how many beds and the configuration your group requires. The Aster: Where History Meets Home in Style has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
- Specific details about bedrooms and bed types is commonly available on booking pages. If not, email the property manager before you book the home. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional pet fees or charges could be applied to your contract.
- Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to browse nearby rentals.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
More tips for your stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
- To make certain damages aren't linked to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon check in. Make contact with the property manager right away to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be useful.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a great resource to find the best local attractions.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Just before checking out, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on excellent ratings to propel new bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation rental. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
