Strategies to get the perfect Charleston area vacation home experience:
Cost saving strategies:
- Summertime is the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. Booking a rental in Spring or Fall is a good way to save on your vacation home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- The earlier you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are booked early. Booking your vacation rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
- Some property managers offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer their guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides have offers and deals for nearby tours and attractions.
Planning and choosing the bestrental home:
- Begin by choosing your a vacation week and a budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Downtown Duplex - St Philip St - Sleeps 20 has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking pages. Otherwise, email or call the host before booking your home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds and bunks. You will need to work out what bed configuration is optimal for your group.
- Does your family require special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental.
- If your group is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, hosts charge additional pet fees.
Have a wonderful stay:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
- Upon arrival, note any issues with the rental property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers disrupting your life at home. Use the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and places you would've not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to spend a rainy day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental home while you are away. Protect your property!
- Re-check the property to make sure that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a great time? Many rental managers make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was great, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
