Tips and Tricks to get the perfect rental experience:
When to book & When to go:
- The sooner your group can reserve a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked early. Reserving your rental home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your rental home.
- Summer time is high season in Charleston. Reserving a rental home in Spring or Fall is an excellent way to save on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property management companies frequently offer customers an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Many management companies supply Charleston area area visitor guides that include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to narrow your rental search:
- Choose vacation dates and spending budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the bed configuration your family requires. Downtown Duplex - St Philip St - Sleeps 20 has 6 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is generally available online. If they are not listed, call the host before reserving the vacation home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
- Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.
- Visiting for a single event? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. .
More considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your phone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of difficulties.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- Make a record of any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately contact the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be valuable if damages are assessed.
- Be respectful. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Upon check-out, take a walk-through to confirm you have not forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, take video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a excellent time? Many rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
