Tricks and tips to get the optimal Charleston area vacation property experience:
How to get the best rental value:
- To find the largest vacation home within your budget, we suggest reserving in Spring or Fall. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities.
- The earlier you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best properties are booked early. Reserving your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Booking websites usually offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Planning, selecting, and booking a perfect Charleston area rental home:
- Choose your vacation dates and maximum budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Dream Weaver
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available online. If not, contact the property management company before you reserve the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms. You'll need to determine what is optimal for your vacation family.
- Is your family looking for special amenities? Most websites include search filters with amenity lists. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find your ideal rental.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you will need a pet-friendly property. Ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
Tips to have a smooth stay:
- Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your phone.
- Note any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if there is a dispute.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your peace. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking and securing the home while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed everything on check-out day. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the property a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your group have a terrific stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
