Our top Charleston vacation rental tips:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in Charleston. Reserve your vacation home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Booking websites typically offer guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great articles, visitors guides contain discounts for nearby accommodations and attractions.

How to choose the best vacation rental in the Charleston area area:

  • Choose dates and maximum budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Downtown Condo 1 Block to King with Private Patio has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the property management company before you reserve your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, hosts charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Are you visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents a lot of issues.
  • Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let thieves spoil your holiday.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, inspect for any problem areas when you arrive. Speak to the host right away to record any issues. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be useful.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • On check-out day, complete a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Hosts rely on great feedback to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to fix it.
