How to get the best vacation home experience:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of SC. To find the best value, consider changing your family's Charleston area trip dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your vacationing group qualifies for a discount.
- Property managers often offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area area magazine when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guide magazines have money saving offers on local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Filter your rental search:
- Select a designated group leader, choose your vacation week, and select a budget.
- Determine how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Spacious Beach Home w\/Boat Parking! Easy Walk to Marina, w\/Gameroom! has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the host before you book the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish what is best for your trip.
- If your group is traveling with pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Request information on breed, size, and type requirements. Some property owners charge additional pet fees.
- If there's a specific Charleston area destination you are enamored with, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
More considerations for your visit:
- Add the host's contact info to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, elevator or appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent lots of concerns.
- Keep your rental home locked while you are out! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Make a record of any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are valuable if damages are attributed to your stay.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to grab the best tacos, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- At departure, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't forget any personal items. Remember to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property one final time and look for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a terrific vacation? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
