Strategies to get the best Charleston area vacation home experience:
Find your perfect rental home:
- Summer is the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. To find the most suitable vacation home for your budget, we highly recommend booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at the beach and popular attractions. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rental homes during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
- Property managers typically offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Many rental management companies supply Charleston area area visitor guides which often include money-saving offers, either offered independently by local companies, or through a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Start by having your group choose a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration you need. 3 bedroom marsh & sunset views. NON SMOKING home 5 minutes from Folly Beach. has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally accessible on booking websites. If not, reach out to the property owner before reserving the home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
- If there's a particular Charleston area attraction you are crazy about, keep an eye out for homes that are either close by, or those that cater to your desires.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- If your group is bringing pets, search for a pet-friendly rental. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the property manager's contact information to your phone. Understand and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Record any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately contact the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful visitors bothering your peace. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and places you would have not otherwise known about!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for fishing?
- Lock your rental property while you're away! Don't let thieves spoil your vacation.
- Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Please make sure to walk through the rental a final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition.
- Did your family have a wonderful time? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or host was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
