How to book the best rental experience:
Sticking to a rental budget:
- To find the most suitable vacation home within budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular attractions.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Some property management companies offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to add trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
- Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on local restaurants, attractions, and tours.
Use filters to narrow your search:
- Begin by selecting your vacation dates and a max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Modern Downtown Charleston Condo has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always available on booking websites. Otherwise, reach out to the host before you book the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches. You will need to work out which bed configuration is right for your vacation.
- If there's a particular Charleston area attraction you are enamored with, browse properties that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your needs.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
- If your group is vacationing with pets, search for a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
More considerations for your visit:
- Add the host's phone number to your smartphone. Take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- Make a record of any damages to the property during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute arises.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent lots of concerns.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would've never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Lock your rental home while you're away. Keep your property safe!
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Leave feedback! Hosts rely on great ratings to inspire future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your review and help them have the best future vacation. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
