Strategies to get the perfect vacation home experience:

When to go & When to book:

  • In the Charleston area area, The sooner you can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved very early. Reserving your rental home 6-12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • Summertime is high season in Charleston. To get the best rental home within your budget, we strongly suggest booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular Charleston area attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Make sure to check with your host or property manager to see if special offers are available for your family.
  • Property management companies frequently offer guests an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Start by having your family choose date ranges and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Lowcountry Cottage Suite 3 miles from oceanfront and 8 miles to downtown! has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is often available on booking pages. Otherwise, call the property management company before you book your rental. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly property. Request specifics on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • Visiting for a single event? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

Additional considerations:

  • Be sure you get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property. Put the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few issues.
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • To make certain that no damages are linked to your visit, make note of any problem areas when you arrive. text the property manager right away to document any issues. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually an incredible resource to find the best local beaches and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the rental to reconfirm you've collected all personal items. Make sure to check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and look for damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Property owners rely on great reviews to compel new reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will will be grateful for your experience find their best vacation home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
