How to get the best Charleston vacation rental experience:
Finding your perfect rental home:
- Reserve your Charleston area vacation in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at the beach.
- Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides have discounts for nearby tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Select a group leader, choose your vacation dates, and select a budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Interior Designer's Dream - 4 Bedroom in Historic Charleston has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is commonly available on booking websites. If not, email or call the property owner before booking the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds.
- If there's a certain Charleston area beach you are enamored with, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before booking.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to search for a property that allows animals. Get specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
Know before you go:
- Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Print and take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Upon check-in, record any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all coorespondence.
- Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many issues.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Keep the property locked while you're gone! Don't let crooks spoil your vacation.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, walk through the property to make sure you've collected all of your things. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the rental a final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Many rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear about it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
