Our top Vacation rental home tips:
Sticking to your spending plan:
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups book their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- To find the best value, consider changing your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and October offer great weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your family qualifies for a discount.
- Booking websites frequently offer their guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great information, travel guides contain deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.
Make a plan and choose the perfect Charleston area rental home:
- Start by having your family choose vacation dates and a max budget.
- Determine how many bedrooms and the bed configuration your family needs. Vacation Villa 5 mins to King St- ‘The Queen Palm’ has 6 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is regularly available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before you book the rental. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms. You will need to establish what is best for your vacation family.
- If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a property that allows animals. Get information on breed, size, and type requirements. Usually, property managers charge additional pet fees.
- Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
Some things to know before you go:
- Add the owner's information to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let thieves spoil your holiday.
- To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, inspect the property for any problem areas upon your arrival. E-mail the property manager right away to report any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be useful.
- Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great source for finding the best local attractions.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Just prior to departing, complete a walk-through to confirm you did not forget anything. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Did your family have a terrific vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
