Vacation rental home tips and tricks:
Getting the most from your rental budget:
- Booking your vacation rental in the Fall or Spring is a great way to save on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of suitable properties. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- In the Charleston area area, The sooner your group can reserve a home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are reserved early. Reserving your rental up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation rental.
- Owners sometimes offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
- Property management companies usually offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, travel guides have discounts for nearby tours and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Select a group lead, choose your dates, and choose a spending budget.
- Note the number beds and the configuration your group needs. Downtown Elegance - Close to King! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is almost always available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before you reserve the home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull out couches in living rooms.
- Is your group looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Remember to confirm all required amenities are available before reserving a rental
- If your family is vacationing with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property managers charge pet deposits and fees.
Have a fantastic stay:
- Add the property manager's phone number to your smartphone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
- To make sure damages are not linked to your stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas upon your arrival. E-mail the rental manager immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, stereo or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent many issues.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your quiet neighborhood. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known!
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would back home.
- Just prior to departing, take a walk-through to confirm you didn't forget anything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental managers make it easy for vacationers to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was terrific, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
