Strategies for getting the best Charleston area rental home experience:
Find your perfect rental home:
- Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. Booking your Charleston area vacation home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is a good way to save on your vacation rental. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property managers usually offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitors guide magazines contain offers and deals for local shops and restaurants.
Narrow your Search:
- Choose a designated group leader, choose your vacation dates, and choose a maximum budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Downtown Elegance - Close to King! has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is regularly available online. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property manager before reserving the vacation property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds.
- If your family is bringing pets, you'll need to find a pet-friendly property. Ask for specifics on breed, size, and type restrictions. Be aware that some property owners charge additional pet fees.
- If there's a specific Charleston area attraction you are crazy about, keep an eye out for rentals that are either close by, or those that cater to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
Know before you go:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Save the instructions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents a lot of issues.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would at home.
- To ensure that no damages are attributed to your family's visit, inspect the property for any problem areas upon your arrival. E-mail the property manager immediately to record any issues. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be useful.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers disrupting your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
- Double-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all personal items on check-out day. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did you have a wonderful stay? Many rental home management companies make it easy for customers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
