Strategies for getting the best vacation home experience:

Sticking to a spending budget:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • To book the most suitable rental home for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, warm weather and the absence of giant crowds at your favorite restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for more information.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain coupons for nearby tours and attractions.

Make a plan and pick the best Charleston area rental:

  • Choose a group leader, choose your dates, and select a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Charleston’s Folly! - King Suite, Pool, Balcony, Walk to Center St! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email the host before you book the vacation property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or may be applied to your contract.
  • Visiting for a single event? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking

Know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • To make sure no damages are attributed to your family's stay, make note of any problem areas when you arrive. Make contact with the host immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will enhance your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are often an incredible resource to find the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Re-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed everything on check-out day. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • After your trip, leave a review! Hosts rely on great ratings to drive new bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.
