Tricks and tips to get the best rental home experience:
Get the best value:
- Summer months are high season in the Charleston area area. To get the most suitable vacation home within budget, we recommend booking in the Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of large crowds at popular Charleston area attractions and restaurants. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
- Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
- Booking websites typically offer renters an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area visitors guides which will include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Filter your search:
- Select your vacation dates and maximum budget.
- Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Downtown 2 bed, 2 bath, pet friendly apartment ~Bumble Bee has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If they are not listed, call the host before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what is suitable for your family.
- Are you visiting for a specific event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental.
- If your family is traveling with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, size, and type requirements. Often, property managers charge additional pet fees.
Additional considerations:
- Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
- To make sure that no damages are attributed to your family's stay, note any problem areas during arrival. Contact the host immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
- Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Respect the neighborhood. Often, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to go for the best drinks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up while you are gone, just like you would back home.
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all belongings at departure. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on great ratings to propel future bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience find their best rental home. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.
