How to get the best rental home experience:
Sticking to a budget:
- The sooner your group can book, the better your selection will be. The best vacation homes are reserved early. Booking your rental property up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
- To get the best value, change your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer excellent temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the Summer months. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your vacationing group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Property managers typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Look for your local Charleston area area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guide magazines have deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
How to select the best vacation home:
- Begin by selecting your the best vacation week and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Southern Shangri-La C
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is usually accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, contact the property manager before you reserve the property. Remember that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
- Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional pet fees or might be applied to your contract.
- Are you looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Use these filters to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are included before reserving a rental
More considerations:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Property managers are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are out, just like you would at home.
- To make sure damages are not attributed to your stay, inspect for any problem areas upon check in. message the property manager right away to record any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disrespectful vacationers disrupting your peace and quiet. Employ the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically help. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Re-check every room of the property to make sure that you've packed all personal items at departure. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the rental a final time and look for any damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the property manager isn't available, take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Hosts rely on good reviews to compel new reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationing families will be thankful you shared your review and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
