Vacation rental booking tips and tricks:
Get the best rental value:
- Summer is high season in Charleston. To book the best vacation home for your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rates, greater selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at Charleston area restaurants, tours, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during holiday gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for additional information.
- Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area travel guides which include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.
Narrow your rental Search:
- Start by having your family choose date ranges and a max budget.
- Note the number beds and the bed configuration your group requires. Pet Friendly & Convenient 2 Bedroom with private fenced in yard and Hottub has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our vacation rental search.
- Precise details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often available on booking websites. Otherwise, email the property owner before booking the home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out which bed configuration is optimal for your vacation.
- Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? Use a map search to find nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
- Some rentals allow pets, and some do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask your host about pets before booking.
More tips for your visit:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Put the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- To make certain that no damages are attributed to your stay, make a record of any problem areas during check in. Make contact with the host immediately to report any damages. If there is a dispute, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, television set or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent a lot of problems.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant vacationers bothering your peace. Practice the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
- Ensure you protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are away, just like you would at home.
- Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Walk through the property a final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
- Did you have a great stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property manager was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
