When to visit Charleston & When to reserve a rental home:
- Reserve your vacation rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are high season in Charleston. To get the best value, consider changing your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, , and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners usually offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, travel guides have deals for nearby accommodations and attractions.
Narrow your rental Search:
- To start, have your group choose a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Cozy Beach Cottage Bungalow - 15 minutes to Folly! has 4 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rental home search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally available on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property owner before you book the home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to work out what configuration is right for your group.
- If your family is bringing pets, you will need a pet-friendly property. Get details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Often, property managers charge additional pet fees.
- Visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
- Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Get the owner's contact number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Keep your rental home locked while you are gone! Don't let burglars spoil your vacation.
- Upon arrival, document any damages to the property and immediately alert the host. Record all coorespondence.
- Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors disrupting your peace and quiet. Use the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would have never otherwise known about!
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Just before checking out, complete a final walk-through to confirm you did not leave anything behind. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden items. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Record a video to document the condition of the property.
- Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent feedback to propel future reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your experience find their best rental home. Be fair with your review. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to solve it.
