How to book the best Charleston area vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your spending plan:

  • To get the best value, try changing your family's Charleston area vacation dates to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, , and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • Book your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer renters an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally costs 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local Charleston area area magazine upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitor guides contain discounts for nearby accommodations and attractions.

Choosing the best vacation rental:

  • Choose dates and max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Rainbow Row Pied-À-Terre Condo in Charleston has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is normally available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the host before booking the home. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You will need to work out what configuration is right for your vacation family.
  • Looking for unique amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available before booking
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Extra fees or applied to your invoice.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Store the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • During check-in, note any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all coorespondence.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable. You'll increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a terrific resource to find the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental home while you're out. Protect the owner's property and your things!
  • On check-out day, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not forget any personal items. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or host was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was inoperable and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
