Strategies to get the optimal vacation rental experience:
Getting the most from your rental home budget:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually become available twelve months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer vacation rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- June, July, and August are the most expensive months along the coast of SC. Booking in the Fall or Spring is an excellent way to save money on your vacation home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable homes. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
- Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your family qualifies for a discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners often offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
- Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Charleston area area travel guides that include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.
Filter your search:
- Start by choosing your vacation dates and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. AMAZING Ocean Front View! 2BR Summerhouse Villa in Wild Dunes! has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
- Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is generally available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the host before you book your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds and bunks.
- If your family is vacationing with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Get details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
- If there's a specific Charleston area attraction you long to visit, search for homes that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your requirements.
- Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
Know before you go:
- Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents lots of difficulties.
- Lock your vacation home while you're away. Protect your property!
- To ensure that no damages are linked to your stay, record any problem areas during check in. Call the rental manager immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
- Be respectful of your neighbors. Often, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can typically help. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
- Re-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Walk through the rental one final time and scan for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, remember to take video and pictures of the rental to record its condition.
- Did your family have a terrific vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was out of order and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
