How to get the best vacation home experience:

Money saving strategies:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Summer months are the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. Reserve your vacation home in the Spring or Fall to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager whether your group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers frequently offer renters an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides contain coupons for nearby tours and attractions.

How to choose the best rental home in Charleston:

  • Begin by selecting potential vacation weeks and a budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Cooper River Cottage has 2 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area rentals search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is generally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the property owner before you book the property. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches.
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.
  • Is your family looking for particular amenities? Most websites include search filters for amenities. Filtering by amenity will allow you to quickly find the perfect rental.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

Tips for your stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the instructions to your phone, and take a printed backup.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, stereo or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent quite a few concerns.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let burglars spoil your holiday.
  • During check-in, document any damages to the property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you have not leave anything behind. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, take video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Hosts rely on great feedback to drive new reservations. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best vacation home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to fix it.
