Tricks and tips to get the perfect Charleston area rental experience:
Finding your perfect rental home:
- Book your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer time is high season in the Charleston area area. To book the largest rental for your budget, we recommend reserving in the Fall or Spring. You'll benefit from lower rental rates, greater selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular attractions. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property manager or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a price reduction.
- Property managers usually offer guests an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
- Often, property management companies supply Charleston area area visitors guides that include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Finding the perfect vacation home:
- Start by selecting potential vacation weeks and a max budget.
- Decide how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. 3C Mariners Walk by AvantStay
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before reserving the rental. Remember that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your group.
- Some properties allow pets, and others don't. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask your host about pet restrictions before booking.
- Visiting for a single event or attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
- Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
During your stay:
- Get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or coffee maker. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of concerns.
- Lock your rental while you are out and about. Protect the owner's property and your stuff!
- Make a record of any damages to the rental upon arrival, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local! Neighbors can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
- On check-out day, complete a walk-through to confirm you didn't leave anything behind. Check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
- Inspect the property a final time and scan for any damage. We recommend walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the property manager isn't available, take photos and video of the property to record its condition.
- Did your group have a excellent stay? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide comments. If your property and/or property management company was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
