Tips and Tricks to get the best Charleston area vacation property experience:

How to get the best value:

  • Booking your Charleston area vacation home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons is one of our best tips for saving money on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules often open 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families book their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner whether your group qualifies for a price reduction or discount.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines contain deals for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Use filters to narrow your search:

  • Start by having your group commit to the best dates and a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration you need. Upscale Historic Suite 3 Blocks from King Street! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking pages. Otherwise, reach out to the property management company before booking the property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is right for your vacation family.
  • Does your group require particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or applied to your invoice.

Additional considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the instructions to your smartphone.
  • Document any damages to the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be useful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, intercom or washer/dryer. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of concerns.
  • Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You will increase your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are usually a great source for finding the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Lock your rental property while you are out! Don't let crooks spoil your trip.
  • Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed everything at check-out. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Please make sure to walk through the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photographs of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a terrific time? Most rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
