How to book the best rental home experience:
Finding your best deal:
- The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental property.
- To get the best rental for your budget, we highly recommend reserving in Fall or Spring months. You'll benefit from lower rates, better selection, warm weather and the absence of large crowds at your favorite Charleston area restaurants and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your family qualifies for a discount.
- Management companies and individual rental owners typically offer their guests an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for specifics.
- Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great information, visitors guide magazines contain deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.
Filter your search:
- Choose your vacation dates and max budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. The Neptune: Lofted Charm, Your Serene Escape has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
- Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts is almost always available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the host before booking the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds and bunks. You'll need to establish what is best for your group.
- Some rentals allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of pet, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the host about your furry family members before booking.
- Are you visiting for a single event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
Advice for a fantastic stay:
- Add the owner's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
- Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent a lot of difficulties.
- Keep your rental home locked while you're away! Don't let burglars spoil your trip.
- During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Frequently, surrounding homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
- Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can usually point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Double-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings at check-out. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Go through the rental a final time and look for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take photographs of the property to record its condition at check-out.
- Did your family have a terrific stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was inoperable and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
