Charleston area rental property booking tips:

When to book & When to go:

  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules usually become available a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • To get the best value, try shifting your vacation week to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warm temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host whether your family qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Property managers usually offer customers an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed vacation time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Charleston area visitors guide magazine upon checking in. If your rental doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitors guides have coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • To start, have your group decide on date ranges and a spending budget.
  • Cozy Downtown Escape has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is generally available on booking websites. Otherwise, call the host before booking the property. Remember that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds.
  • If your group is bringing pets, you'll need to find a rental that allows animals. Get details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a specific Charleston area attraction you simply love, search for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

Have a great stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, television set or appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call prevents lots of issues.
  • Keep the property locked while you're out! Don't let burglars spoil your trip.
  • Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately send them to the property manager. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking restrictions can make a stay more pleasurable. You'll magnify your chance to make some new local friends, and resident neighbors are a great source for finding the best local restaurants, beaches, and hangouts.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • When it's time to leave, take a walk-through to make sure you didn't forget anything. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property a final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager isn't available, take photos of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did you have a wonderful time? Most rental management companies make it easy for customers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear it. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
