Tricks and tips to get the very best vacation home experience:
When to book & When to go:
- The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation home.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in the Charleston area area. Book your Charleston area rental home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve a beach front rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Charleston area vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
- Some hosts and property managers offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group before you book.
- Property managers typically offer customers an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
- Many management companies supply Charleston area area travel guides which include special deals, either offered independently by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Charleston area area magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.
Make a plan and choose your Charleston area rental:
- Select a designated group leader, select your dates, and select a maximum budget.
- Decide how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Historic Harleston Village Monthly Rental has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
- Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually available online. If not, call the host before you reserve the vacation property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You'll need to determine what configuration is suitable for your vacation group.
- Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges could be applied to your contract.
- Does your group require unique amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters.
- Suitable accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
Advice for a terrific stay:
- Be sure you get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your . We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Property managers are great sources of help! Feel free to ask any questions before, during, or after your stay.
- Ensure you protect the owner (and your stuff!) by locking the rental when you are out, just like you would back home.
- Document any issues with the property upon arrival, and immediately send them to the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute arises.
- Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are often a fantastic resource to find the best local beaches and restaurants.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help. Who better to ask where to order the best nachos, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Double-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
- Did your family have a terrific time? Many rental home management companies make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property manager was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
