Tips for getting the best rental home experience:

Finding your best deal:

  • To book the largest rental within your budget, we strongly suggest reserving in Fall or Spring. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of large crowds at restaurants, beaches, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during Winter holiday get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your family qualifies for a reduced rate.
  • Property management companies usually offer renters an option to add vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Look for your local visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and visitor centers. In addition to great articles, visitor guide magazines contain money saving offers on nearby tours and attractions.

Filter your rental search:

  • Select your vacation week and spending budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your group requires. SUNSET (3BR) Best of Charleston Award has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Charleston area vacation rental search.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. Otherwise, reach out to the host before you book the property. Remember that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches and bunk beds.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking.
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, you must book a pet-friendly rental. Request details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Usually, hosts charge additional pet fees.

Know before you go:

  • Put the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Document any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be beneficial if a dispute arises.
  • Property managers are there to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Respect your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you're gone! Don't let burglars ruin your family vacation.
  • On check-out day, take a final walk-through to confirm you have not leave anything behind. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your family have a fantastic time? Most rental home management companies make it easy for clients to provide reviews. If your rental and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
