Rental home booking tips and tricks:
When to visit & When to book:
- Book your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many families reserve their Summer rental homes during Thanksgiving and Christmas get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
- Summer months are the most expensive season in coastal SC. To find the best value, consider shifting your vacation to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant temperatures, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
- Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner if your group qualifies for a reduced rate.
- Booking websites often offer customers an option to add vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which costs 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for additional information.
- Look for your local Charleston area visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have offers and deals for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.
How to pick the best vacation rental:
- Start by selecting a vacation week and a maximum budget.
- Note the number bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Courtyard Suite with Tranquil Garden & Heated Pool has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our search.
- Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking websites. Otherwise, call the host before you book your rental. Note that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what configuration is optimal for your vacation group.
- Are you bringing the family pet? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your host before booking, and study your rental agreement! Extra fees or charges might be applied to your contract.
- If there's a particular Charleston area destination you crave, browse rentals that are either near by, or those that cater especially to your desires.
- Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before booking.
Additional considerations:
- Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and check in/check out procedures for your rental. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
- Hosts are great sources of help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
- Lock your rental while you're away. Keep your property safe!
- During arrival, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
- Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking policies is the right thing to do.
- Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
- Just prior to departing, take a walk-through to confirm you did not forget any personal items. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
- Inspect the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take photos of the rental to record its condition.
- Leave a review! Property owners rely on great feedback to propel future bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will will be grateful for your feedback find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded quickly to remedy it.
